Tips: Your stay is in Porz/Zündorf (51149), on the city's south-eastern edge — outside the central low-emission zone, so reaching the door is fine without a sticker. You'd only need the green Umweltplakette if you drive into central Cologne (e.g. the cathedral / old town) — see checklist. Confirm the roof box clears the car-park height barrier (often ~2 m).

Tips: Great kids' afternoon — Maximilianpark Hamm (the glass-elephant park) has big playgrounds, water-play and lawns. Good news on stickers: Hamm has no low-emission zone, so you don't need the green Umweltplakette here — it only matters if you drive into central Cologne.

  • ~15:30Arrive Gołuski — Pamiątkowa 32/1, ~15 km west of Poznań, so you reach the door before the city. Dinner around the Stary Rynek if you fancy heading in.
Tips: Crossing into Poland (Świecko) is just a sign — no checks. Switch dipped headlights ON (required day & night in Poland). The A2 has a toll booth before Poznań (around Nowy Tomyśl) — cars pay by card or cash; keep some złoty handy.

Tips: Kalisz is Poland's oldest recorded town. The Park Miejski (the oldest public park in Poland) has shaded paths and a playground; the Główny Rynek is good for an easy stroll and ice cream.

Tips: Piła sits on the Gwda river with forests and lakes (Płotki) on the doorstep — easy paddling / beach mornings for the kids during your stay.

  • 10:00Depart Piła — head north-west toward the coast (via Wałcz / Kołobrzeg direction).

  • ~13:30Arrive Rewal — SOLEO Family Resort (Pobierowo end of the Rewal coast). Stay through to Sat 15 Aug.
Tips: Rewal is a classic family beach resort. Don't miss the narrow-gauge seaside railway (Nadmorska Kolej Wąskotorowa) and the dramatic Trzęsacz cliff-top church ruin. Long beaches and a promenade for the buggy.

  • 14:00Depart Rewal — short hop; do it in one go unless the 1-yr-old needs a break.
  • ~15:45Arrive Szczecin — Budziszyńska 31, 70-023 Szczecin (Pogodno). Drop bags, then park the car for the night (see Tips).
Tips: Heads-up — 15 Aug is a public holiday in Poland (Assumption + Armed Forces Day): many shops shut and roads/coast are busier, so leave a little earlier if traffic looks heavy. In Szczecin, Kasprowicz Park has a big playground and boating lake; the Wały Chrobrego waterfront terraces are a lovely evening walk.

Guarded overnight parking near Budziszyńska 31 (both are open guarded lots, so the roof box is no problem — no height barriers): 1) Parking strzeżony, Zygmunta Chmielewskiego 17 — closest, ~600 m away, 24h, inexpensive (“left a car here a week, no problems”). Tips: German shops are closed on Sundays, so buy snacks/nappies the day before. Fuel up the evening before so the morning getaway is clean.

  • 05:45Depart Hamm — Albertstr. 21. Set off in the dark; kids will likely sleep. Aim for minimal stops.
  • ~08:30Stop (15 min) — one short comfort/fuel stop only (around Venlo NL or Antwerp). Keep it brief.
  • ~11:00Arrive Calais — EES exit scan, then check-in (deadline 11:36). Fuel up before boarding if needed.
  • 11:36Check-in / board — check-in deadline; train departs 12:36. ~35 min tunnel; clocks go back 1h.
  • ~12:11 UKFolkestone — drive home: ~280 mi / ~4h45 to Irlam (M20 / M25 / M40 / M6). Home ~17:00.
Tips: The only leg with a hard deadline. Leaving Hamm at 05:45 lands you in Calais around 11:00 — comfortably before the 11:36 check-in, train at 12:36. If anything feels uncertain (weather, the 1-yr-old, Antwerp ring traffic), leave by 05:30 and skip the stop. Eurotunnel can usually move you to a later train if you just miss it, but don't bank on it at peak August. If you're well ahead of the clock, the outbound parks — Frankenberger Park (Aachen) and Blaarmeersen (Ghent) — sit on this reverse route too.

Documents & people

  • Passports for all four — biometric, issued within the last 10 years and valid at least 3 months beyond 17 Aug.
  • EES (new EU biometric border): live in 2026. First crossing at Folkestone = face scan + fingerprints at the kiosks; children under 12 are photo-only, no fingerprints. Allow extra time at peak summer; you're scanned again leaving Calais.
  • ETIAS (the ~€7 travel authorisation) is not required yet — double-check nearer the date.
  • Driving licence, V5C logbook, and motor insurance certificate — confirm EU cover with your insurer.
  • European breakdown cover, travel insurance, and a GHIC card for the family.

The car & the roof box

  • Green ‘Umweltplakette’ sticker — for this route it's optional: Hamm has no zone, your Porz stay is outside Cologne's zone, and the Autobahn never needs one. You'd only need it to drive into central Cologne. Still worth having as insurance — your hybrid Tucson qualifies for the green sticker, it's ~€5–15 for the life of the car, and the fine is ~€80+. Order online ahead from TÜV/DEKRA, or buy in Germany at any TÜV/DEKRA.
  • UK sticker on the rear (not ‘GB’), and headlamp beam deflectors for driving on the right.
  • Warning triangle + a hi-vis vest for every person, kept in the cabin; first-aid kit (required in Germany).
  • Roof box: cuts fuel economy ~10–25% and catches cross-winds on exposed autobahn/bridges — hold ~120–130 km/h, don't exceed the box's rated speed, re-check straps at every stop, mind ~2 m height barriers.
  • Two child seats fitted correctly — the 1-yr-old rear-facing.

Tolls, money & zones

  • UK, Belgium, Germany and France motorways on this route are toll-free for cars (E40 Calais–Cologne included). No vignettes needed.
  • Poland: the A2 has one tolled concession section (around Nowy Tomyśl–Konin) — cars pay at booths by card or cash. Most S-road expressways are free.
  • Carry some euros and Polish złoty in cash for tolls, parking and small stops.
  • City low-emission zones in Brussels & Antwerp need registration — stay on the motorway/ring and you're fine.

Driving rules

  • Drive on the right; at every junction after the tunnel, consciously check your side.
  • Poland: dipped headlights on at all times, day and night. Speed / average-speed cameras are common.
  • Germany: autobahn has de-restricted stretches (advisory 130 km/h) — with the box and kids, hold a steady ~120–130.
  • Drink-drive limits are very low (Poland effectively zero ~0.02%; Germany 0.05%). Handheld phones banned everywhere.

With a 5- & 1-year-old

  • Snacks, water, window sun-shades, comfort toys, tablet/headphones within reach; spare clothes, nappies and wipes in the cabin, not the roof box.
  • Stick to the ~2-hourly stops — a 30–40 min playground break resets everyone and beats pushing through.
  • For the 04:54 tunnel and early returns, move them sleeping in pyjamas; keep stops dark and quiet so they resettle.
  • Playground words on signs: Spielplatz (DE), plac zabaw (PL), speeltuin / plaine de jeux (BE).

Eurotunnel / LeShuttle

  • Arrive within the check-in window — it opens ~2h before and closes ~45–60 min before departure. Don't arrive more than ~2h early.
  • Fuel stations are on both terminals; top up before boarding so you roll off ready.
  • Stay in the car for the 35-minute crossing; handbrake on, engine off, windows slightly open.
